Wood Fired Art Process

The ancient African and Native American wood firing technique often yields remarkable surface effects as dancing flames imprint colorful designs from fumes of carefully selected combustible materials and earth minerals.

Alison prepares her clay pieces for wood firing by hand painting hand made terra sigillata upon the surface and then delicately buffs the terra sigillata to sheen with organic materials such as seashells and river rocks.

After bisque firing the clay pieces she then carefully places them within a meticulously constructed hardwood bonfire framework in preparation for exposures to oxidation and reduction atmospheres, which emanates unique Wood Fired Art flame painting.
